David Sedaris Still Rocks My World

I had the pleasure of a lifetime last night — no, not that kind! I’m talking about an evening with David Sedaris, who gave a reading at the Opera house in San Francisco. He read us some unpublished works, as well as a roll-on-the-floor-laughing essay on these “undecided” voters we all hear so much about in the news. To quote Sedaris, the choice at this point is akin to choosing “the chicken or human feces covered in glass.” True, some people may not mind the shit — it’s the glass part that throws them for a loop.

Pick up Sedaris’ latest, “When You Are Engulfed In Flames.” You will laugh out loud.

Fantastic exhibit at The Crucible’s Fire Arts Festival in Oakland, Calif., July 11, 2008. This was one of the coolest events I’ve ever been to. Fire and fire-like substances everywhere. Flamenco dancing. Now, how to fit welding classes into my schedule…

A foot-shaped cactus grows inside the botantical gardens at Golden Gate Park. Or do we walk on cactus-shaped feet?

I love vegetation that resembles humans. It reminds me of the similarities between us. Just add a little water and sunshine and we glow.

If you take a look around at decimated neighborhoods and schools, this is what’s missing. And this is why I love Alice Waters, slow food chef extraordinaire at Chez Panisse in Berkeley, Calif. I don’t need to go on and on about who Waters is, but I do love her focus on local and community. I have great hopes that the movement to rethink our carbon footprint will follow and not just stop at marketing en vogue.

Have lunch with Alice.
